Quick Add Remove Features in Windows 2008 R2

December 8, 2010 Leave a comment

Forget the historical Add/Remove Programs utility when dealing with default Windows Features. In Windows Server 2008 R2, you have a new Server Manager menu (within Administrative Tools) to quickly Add or Remove Windows Features.

Here’s how you can deal with it:
- Start Administrative Tools -> Server Manager -> select Features in left pane
- In the wizard, Select Features page will list of what’s already available.
To remove a feature, checkout the checkbox against that specific feature (you will see a warning note if there are dependent applications/ features – you can select “Remove Dependent Feature” button). Click Next and then click Remove. You’re done.
To add a feature, checkout the checkbox against that specific feature (you will see a warning note if there are pre-requisite features that shall be added as well – click on “Add Required Features” to add pre-requisite features as well). Click Next and then click Install. And you’d be done.
